Thank you for taking the time to respond to the proposed traffic calming proposals in B377 Feltham Road, Ashford.
Surrey County Council received 191 responses during the statutory consultation period (1st November to 29th November 2024).

Your objection(s) have been considered by the Highway Engagement & Commissioning Manager in consultation with the Divisional Member County Councillor Joanne Sexton under delegated authority. The decision has been made to set aside the comments and the proposed traffic calming scheme will go ahead as per the proposals originally set out by Surrey County Council.

Surrey County Council are promoting a draft Traffic Regulation Order on road safety grounds, following an assessment of the road, alongside receiving intelligence led data relating to the historic nature of collisions which have occurred along Feltham Road.
The nature of the recorded collisions has resulted in many loss of control incidents and on a couple of occasions, cars have entered private properties near to the bend. Speed survey data captured also shows extremely high vehicle speeds in a 30mph, which is unacceptable. The most effective treatment to reduce vehicle speeds, collisions and casualties is to propose the introduction of traffic calming features along the length of Feltham Road.
The Proposals
Surrey County Council propose to install speed cushions (located directly opposite each other at each location other than at the existing pedestrian refuge facility to the east of Chestnut Avenue, where a speed cushion is proposed either side of it). Full width road tables with appropriate drainage facilities are also proposed near the junction of the Chalmers Road East at the existing Zebra crossing facility and another full width road table between no.222-No.224 Feltham Road.
Benefits
The safety of pedestrians, particularly those who are children walking, cycling and scooting to/from the nearby Echelford Primary School via the existing zebra crossing and also those who are visually/mobility impaired, will be improved by emphasising the requirement for drivers to reduce vehicle speeds appropriately when traversing over the proposed raised zebra crossing. Studies have shown that the slower a driver is travelling, the less likelihood there is of a serious or fatal injury occurring. It is expected that installing traffic calming measures will contribute to not only improving road safety, but also making it a more welcoming and safer environment for all road users and for the local residents and visitors of Ashford.
