URGENT: HAVE YOUR SAY BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE

ISG do NOT support postponing the County Council elections currently scheduled for May 2025. The Labour Government has indicated that this will only happen in priority areas with clear and agreed-upon plans. This is not the case in Surrey. Surrey County Council has also not consulted or discussed other options with the Districts and Boroughs before making a public statement.

Please read the Labour Governments White Paper which outlines their clear intentions and direction; can be found here.

This should be a collaboration between the Government, Surrey County Council and the residents & businesses of Spelthorne to agree on our response to the Governments White Paper.

This is our Spelthorne, our Surrey, our future.

Suggestions to raise:

Deciding to postpone elections without consultation with one’s constituents is flagrantly undemocratic.

The current Councilors have served their fixed term of office and will hold no democratic mandate from May 2025 onwards.

The proposed timeline for the completion of devolution by May 2026, in order to hold elections, is purely aspirational. There are no legally binding assurances with the actions of Westminster and their legislative calendars now controlling the timelines of local democracy.

With no mandate for these changes in the current Labour Governments manifesto and current Councilors having reached the end of the fixed term. The public has the right to elect a new group of Councilors who may better represent the views and wishes of their constituents.

Or any of your own.
