EV Charging–Consultation Update
Surrey County Council has issued an update on the timetable and site‑validation process covering the next phase of residential on‑street EV charge-point installations across Spelthorne.
Consultation Timetable
The public consultation will run from 3 August to 31 August.
Locations
The following sites in Spelthorne have passed commercial‑viability checks by Connected Kerb and safety/practicality review by SCC parking managers:
- 70–52 Warren Road, Ashford (TW15 1TR)
- 19–1 Glen Avenue, Ashford (TW15 2JE)
These locations have come from a combination of resident suggestions and SCC officer recommendations, and have been assessed by Connected Kerb as commercially viable. Parking managers have reviewed each site to ensure suitability from a road‑safety and practicality perspective.
Once live the consultation will be added https://scnv.io/evcpconsultation, with feedback invited via the Commonplace survey platform or the SCC customer helpline. The consultation will be open for 28 days.
Parking
No Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs) are proposed at this stage. This means:
- All bays will remain unrestricted and available to all vehicles.
- Any future proposal to designate bays for EV‑only use would require a separate TRO process, including a new public consultation.
This approach is intended to address residents’ concerns about potential loss of parking.
Future phases
More locations across Spelthorne are expected to follow, including:
- Sites fully funded by Connected Kerb.
- Sites partially funded through the Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) fund, subject to SCC’s application outcome.
Further updates will be provided as additional locations are prepared for consultation within the borough.
previously posted 26th June 2026
Surrey County Council is beginning the first phase of a countywide rollout of lamp‑column electric vehicle charge-points, with installations starting from 22nd June. This first work package includes multiple locations across Spelthorne, covering Ashford, Laleham & Shepperton, Lower Sunbury & Halliford, Staines‑upon‑Thames, and Sunbury Common & Ashford Common.
These new chargers are designed to support residents who park on the street and need a simple, reliable way to charge an electric vehicle overnight.
What’s Being Installed?
- Slow EV chargers fitted directly into existing lamp columns
- No excavation or major street works
- No EV‑only bays or new parking restrictions
- Installation completed within part of one day
- Low‑impact, safe, overnight charging
Because these are small, low‑impact installations and there is no statutory requirement for consultation, works will proceed without individual resident notification. However, Surrey County Council did run a public consultation on its EV charge-point strategy, which included lamp‑column chargers, and residents were able to comment on the overall approach. Why This Matters?
These chargers are designed to serve local demand for decades to come. Even residents who do not currently own an EV may benefit in future as electric vehicles become more common. Experience from previous installations shows very low levels of complaint once chargers are in place.
